Historiographical tradition in the Persian language has been particularly abundant in the Mediaeval and Modern periods. Most often, history was recorded at court, often upon the order of patrons, some of whom belonged to the reigning dynasty, and others who came from circles close to power. The historiography produced in this context offers an official version of history, but it is far from being the only version. Here, we are interested in another kind of historiography, that produced in a non-official context, outside the court and away from the seat of power, in the peripheral regions, in various socio-professional and family contexts. This account of history, often a complement, sometimes in contradiction with official historiography, can be seen in a variety of forms: the texts of chronicles or local histories, biographical accounts, archive documents as well as architectural or funerary inscriptions. We hope to provide a glimpse of this wealth during the two workshop sessions.

Intended audience / Public

This research workshop, primarily intended for advanced Master students and PhD candidates working on history of Turko-Iranian societies in the Mediaeval and Early Modern periods, is open to all interested academic participants. Papers will be given in English yet discussion is possible either in English or French. Knowledge of Persian is not compulsory although it is strongly advisable. Basic knowledge about historiographical traditions of the Iranian world would be a plus.

Objectives of the workshop / Objectifs de l’atelier

The workshop is composed of two panels: the first one, on Friday 26 March 2021, is devoted to various types of narrative sources and documents, and the following one, on Tuesday 20 April 2021, focuses on funerary, monumental and dedicatory epigraphy.
Through case studies on targeted subjects set specifically in their historical context, the workshop aims at bringing to light the variety of information contributed by biographical data towards the study of political, social, and cultural history of groups and individuals in Turko-Iranian societies in the Mediaeval and Early Modern periods.
To do this, narrative and epigraphic sources, mainly in Persian but also in Arabic, will be explored, and the speakers will suggest a re-reading of them as well as providing precise examples of their methodological approaches (data collection, tools, analyses, etc.).

Scientific context / Contexte scientifique

This workshop is part of the scientific project “Historiography outside the court: contribution of non-official sources to the history of Turko-Iranian societies from Anatolia to Central Asia, 11th-18th centuries” (2020-2021), led by Dr Camille Rhoné-Quer (Assistant Professor, Aix-Marseille University / IREMAM, Aix-en-Provence) and Dr Maria Szuppe (Senior Researcher, CNRS / CeRMI, Paris), with the support of the Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique Moyen-Orient et Monde Musulman (GIS MOMM, AAP2020). This is one of the projects carried out by CeRMI (Axe I : Produire, écrire, échanger / I.2.
